Tyler Murphy's late charge gave the Bishop's Gaiters men's rugby team a 19-12 win over the ETS Pirhanas in Quebec university rugby union action at Coulter Field, Sunday. With five minutes left, the first year centre eluded several tacklers down the right sideline and looked set to score when he was brought down by a high tackle. He was awarded a penalty try for his efforts, which broke the 12-12 and gave the Gaiters the winning points. The Gaiters (1-0) overcame a 12-5 halftime deficit to down ETS (0-1), who had taken the lead on the last play of the first half.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Gaiters' first chance to score came at the 15-minute mark, as a pair of ETS penalties gave Bishop's the ball 15 yards out from the try line. The Gaiters lost possession, but Connor McCaffrey charged down a kick and rumbled into the end zone to open the scoring. ETS held much of the possession in the first half, and scored on a 15-yard run by Tom Saurin, who finished the play after a pair of passes. ETS took the lead on the stroke of halftime thanks to a try by Brice Rigaudie. In the second half, Murphy tied the game for Bishop's in the 54th minute, and 17 minutes later, was awarded the penalty try that gave Bishop's the lead. ETS came to within 5 yards of goal in the dying stages of the game, but gave up a late penalty and the Gaiters held on for the win, their 18th straight over the Pirhanas.
