WOLFVILLE, N.S. – A new league, a new coach and a new era for the Bishop's Gaiters football team kicked off on Saturday in Wolfville, N.S. as they traveled to play Acadia in their first ever contest as an associate member of Atlantic University Sport. Unfortunately for the Gaiters that was all the history they made, as the host Axemen spoiled the party with a 27-10 victory.
The Gaiters first ever play in the AUS
How it happened:
The Gaiters got off to a slow start in their first game action of any kind in 2017. Acadia led 9-0 after the first quarter doubled that to 18-0 at the half.
A Vincent Dube field goal opened the scoring for Bishop's in the third quarter but the hosts answered with a major. Bishop's seemingly started to grab momentum after Acadia fumbled on their own 25-yard line. The very next play
Trey Millings (Laval, Que./Champlain-Lennoxville) torched the Axemen defense for Bishop's first and only touchdown after catching a swing pass from quarterback
Dylan Tucker (Campbell River, B.C./Timberline S.S.). Tucker was making his first U SPORTS start.
The Gaiters could not get closer than 25-10 as drive after drive the Axemen defense snuffed out any Bishop's attack. A late safety conceded by the Gaiters made the final 27-10 and handed Bishop's its first loss of 2017.
