Men’s Rugby: Gaiters host league champions Montreal for Homecoming

THIS WEEK: The Bishop's Gaiters men's rugby team (2-0-0) continues their season-opening homestand on Friday night as they host the Montreal Carabins (2-0-0). Kickoff is set for 8:10 p.m. at Coulter Field.

THE RECORDS: The Gaiters come into the game with a 2-0-0 record, after tight wins over ETS and McGill in their opening two games. After picking up the full five points against McGill, the Gaiters have nine points on the year and are one point back of Concordia in the "2-3-6" division standings. Montreal, meanwhile, swept a home-and-home with Sherbrooke to open the season, and leads the "1-4-5" division with a perfect 10 points.

NOTHING BUT NET: Friday's game will be webcast at www.gaiters.ca/webcast. Score updates will also be available on Twitter, by following @BishopsGaiters.

LAST TIME OUT: A try in the 54th minute by Andrew Harrison (Calgary, Alta./William Aberhart S.S.) broke a 22-22 tie, and the Gaiters went on to defeat the McGill Redmen 32-27 on Sunday at Coulter Field. Brock Spencer (Langley, B.C./Sacred Heart (Ottawa)) (2nd minute), Carter Filion (St. Catharines, Ont./Ridley College) (15th) and Paul Gehrig (Palma de Mallorca, Spain/Agora Portals) (34th) scored first-half tries for Bishop's, who led 22-17 at halftime. Josh Bray (Lennoxville, Que./Bishop's College School) finished with 12 points, as he went 3-for-4 on conversions and connected on two penalty goals.

WHEN LAST WE MET: The Gaiters ran out of time as they dropped a 24-22 decision to Montreal on Oct. 22, 2016 at Coulter Field. The Carabins led 24-15 with 15 minutes to play, but a try by Shayne Crawford (Lennoxville, Que./Champlain-Lennoxville) in the 79th minute, followed by a conversion by Patrick Lawton (Halifax, England/Queen Ethelburga's College), cut the gap to just two points with seconds left to play. The Gaiters regained possession after the kickoff, but were unable to get in position for a final score, as Montreal survived to keep their undefeated record intact.
