Freshman Firth’s Six Scores Lead Gaiters over Redmen in 3OT Classic

Freshman Samuel Firth (Ottawa, Ont./)'s sixth tally of the night in the sudden-victory portion of overtime propelled the Gaiters and their raucous crowd into a frenzy as Bishop's topped the McGill Redmen 12-11 in CUFLA East Lacrosse action. The game, an instant classic, kicked off Homecoming 2017 festivities on Coulter Field on Thursday night.

The victory, Bishop's fourth straight to start the 2017 campaign, was also their first against McGill since 2012. For the Redmen, the loss is their first blemish of 2017.  Bishop's is now the lone undefeated team in the CUFLA East.

How it happened:
Bishop's opened the scoring mid-way thought the first quarter with two quick goals but the Redmen answered back to tie the game 2-2.  The score stayed close though the second before Gaiters grabbed a 4-3 edge at halftime.  Bishop's pulled ahead in the third as Firth scored two of his eventual six goals in the stanza to give the Gaiters a 7-4 lead.  The fourth was all McGill; they found the back of the net four times to Bishop's one to send the game into overtime.  In the extra period, McGill carried the momentum.  They grabbed their first lead of the game and extended to 11-8 before Bishop's refused to lose.  Sam Fontaine (Cornwall, Ont./École Secondaire la Citadelle) gave Bishop's the spark they needed, igniting the Gaiters comeback. Two more tallies from Simon Winquist (Sherbrooke, Que./Champlain-Lennoxville) and Firth tied the game and forced a third period of overtime, this one sudden-victory. Bishop's controlled from the start and Firth eventually rewarded the over 500 Gaiters faithful who stuck around with the OT winner.
