Women’s Soccer: Gaiters take to the road for two in Montreal this week

THIS WEEK: The Bishop's Gaiters women's soccer team (1-3-2), heads up Highway 10 this week to Montreal for a pair of games. On Friday, they visit the McGill Martlets at Molson Stadium, starting at 7 p.m. On Sunday, they go west to take on the Concordia Stingers in a 1 p.m. kickoff.

THE RECORDS: The Gaiters have a 1-3-2 record, and are in a four-way tie for fifth in the RSEQ women's soccer league. They picked up their first win of the season in resounding fashion on Monday with a 4-0 shutout of local rivals Sherbrooke. McGill is also 1-3-2 on the year, however they are on a four-game winless streak. Last week, they drew 1-1 with UQAM and dropped a 1-0 decision to Concordia. The Stingers are in fourth place in the conference with a 1-3-2 mark after notching their first win on Sunday. Earlier in the weekend, they played to a 2-2 draw with UQTR.

LAST WEEK: On Friday, Méganne Sauvé and Chloe Villeneuve scored for the No. 6-ranked Montreal Carabins as they downed the Gaiters 2-0. Danielle Desrochers (North Vancouver, B.C./Handsworth S.S.), making her first career start, made eight saves for the Gaiters, while Lindsay Moore (Lennoxville, Que./Champlain College Lennoxville) took player of the game honours for Bishop's. On Monday, Frédérique Rivard scored three times as Bishop's shut out the Sherbrooke Vert & Or 4-0 at Coulter Field. After Jessica Dodig (Bolton, Ont.) opened the scoring in the 25th minute, Rivard found the net in the 44th and 45th minutes to send the Gaiters into halftime up 3-0. She completed the hat trick in the 80th minute, Desrochers made five saves to pick up her first career win, and first career shutout.

CHAPEAU, FRÉDI!: The hat trick by Rivard on Monday was the first for the Gaiters since Stephanie Burnett found the net three times in a 3-1 win over UQTR on Sept. 14, 2008. She is now tied for fourth on the conference scoring list, one of eight players who have three goals so far this season.

PASSING FANCY: With three assists so far, veteran midfielder Sarah-Kim Bergeron (Calgary, Alta./Bishop Carroll S.S.) is tied for the league lead with Kim Tremblay of Laval and Montreal's Catherine Proulx. Bergeron also has one goal, to give her a total of four points on the season.

WHEN LAST WE MET THE MARTLETS: Tia Lore scored twice to lead the Martlets to a 2-0 win over the Gaiters on Oct. 2, 2016 at Coulter Field. Rebecca Bensimon (Dollard-Des-Ormeaux, Que./John Abbott College) made five saves for Bishop's in a losing cause. The Gaiters' last trip to Molson Stadium, on Sept. 9, 2016, also resulted in a 2-0 McGill win.

WHEN LAST WE MET THE STINGERS: Rookie forward Lindsay Moore (Lennoxville, Que./Champlain College Lennoxville) scored the equalizer in the 65th minute as the Gaiters drew 1-1 with Concordia, on Sept. 7 at Coulter Field. Chama Sedki had opened the scoring for Concordia on a 25th-minute penalty kick. Mehana Heins (Ottawa, Ont./Merivale S.S.) made six saves to pick up the draw for the Gaiters. Bergeron earned player-of-the-game honours for Bishop's, and picked up an assist on the game-tying goal.
