Men’s Rugby: Gaiters head around the mountain for only local derby of 2017

THIS WEEK: The Bishop's Gaiters men's rugby team (3-0-0) has their first road game of 2017, as they visit the Sherbrooke Vert & Or on Saturday night. Kickoff at the U de S turf field (on Chemin Ste-Catherine) is set for 7 p.m.

THE RECORDS: The Gaiters come into the game with a perfect record, after close wins over ETS, McGill and the Université de Montreal. The Gaiters have 14 of a possible 15 points so far this season, and are one point back of Concordia in the "2-3-6" division standings. The Vert & Or are 0-3 on the year and sit last in the "1-4-5" division with three points. They fell, 44-28, to Concordia last week, but did pick up two bonus points in the loss.

LAST TIME OUT: A pair of tries by Carter Fillion and a last-minute defensive stand gave the Bishop's Gaiters a 25-20 win over the Montreal Carabins at Coulter Field last Friday. The Homecoming weekend crowd of nearly 900 fans saw Fillion score his second try of the game with 13 minutes to play, breaking a 20-20 tie, and then saw the Gaiters withstand a late, multiple-phase possession by the Carabins to preserve the victory in a wild contest that featured five lead changes.

WHEN LAST WE MET: A pair of tries by Carter Filion helped the Bishop's Gaiters to a 10-10 tie with the Sherbrooke Vert et Or in RSEQ university men's rugby action on Oct. 16, 2016 in Sherbrooke. The sophomore from Ridley College scored twice in the second half as the Gaiters ccame back from a 10-0 deficit to earn a share of the spoils in a game played in difficult conditions.

HE'S NOT JOSHING AROUND: Third-year scrum half Josh Bray (Lennoxville, Que./Bishop's College School) leads the Gaiters 19 points, on five conversions and three penalty goals this season. He is second in the league, trailing only Concordia's Jonathan Banks, who has 34 points. Tyler Murphy (Bromont, Que. ) is the Gaiters' leading try-scorer this season, with three tries and 17 points on the year.
