The Bishop's University Women's soccer team will get the ball rolling on the 2017 home season, as they host Concordia on Thursday night at 8:15 p.m. on Coulter Field.
Season Start
Bishop's (0-1-0) opened their season against No. 1 Laval falling 2-0 in Quebec City. Concordia (0-0-1) kicked off their season drawing with UQAM (0-0-1).
Last Year
Paul Ballard, Bishop's head coach, gained his first U SPORTS win against Concordia in 2016. The Gaiters won 2-0 in Montreal after an own goal by the Stingers and
Cristina Tavares (Kingston, Ont./Regiopolis-Notre Dame C.H.S.)' goal off a corner kick by graduated Gaiter
Megan Marchei (Montreal, Que./John Abbott College). It also marked the first tick in the win column for Bishop's in two years.
Athlete of the Week
In her first start of the 2017 season,
Mehana Heins (Ottawa, Ont./Maryville S.S.) faced a tough test in Laval on Aug 31st. The defending U SPORTS champs tested her often firing 11 shots on target over the 90 minutes, on which Mehana made nine saves. She was awarded the Provigo, Robert Lafond, Athlete of the Week for her performance.
Ballard's Beat
"We are really excited about playing on Coulter Field. We should have a solid crowd, with the students being back and not busy with classes yet. Anytime we get to play at home is an exciting opportunity for us. As a program we are trying to build Coulter Field as a fortress, a place where any team that comes to play against us knows that they should be ready for a battle.
The fact that we are playing Concordia, early on in the season is another good challenge for us to see where we are at. For us to start making headway in the RSEQ and to change the perception of Bishop's women's soccer, we need to start showing more and more that we can compete with schools like Concordia."
