21 UP: Noblecilla and Milhomme lead Gaiters to sweep over Stingers

SHERBROOKE, Que. – Edith Noblecilla (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Santo Domingo de Guzmain) and Ashley Milhomme (Repentigny, Que./Collège Montmorency) each scored 21 points to lead the Bishop's Gaiters to a comprehensive 81-68 win over the No. 10-ranked Concordia Stingers in Quebec university women's basketball action at the Mitchell Gym, Saturday. Noblecilla went 10-for-16 from the field, and made eight assists, while Milhomme was 8-for-14 overall and drained five three-pointers to lead Bishop's to their second straight win, and fourth in the past six games overall.

With the win, the Gaiters complete the sweep of their home-and-home series with the Stingers, and move into sole possession of third place in the RSEQ standings with a 4-5 record, a half-game ahead of the Stingers, who fell to 3-5.

The Gaiters (11-8, 4-5 RSEQ) took a 9-7 lead with 6:32 left in the first quarter, and never trailed from that point on, as they led by as many as 25 points. Bishop's led 24-17 after the first quarter, 43-30 at halftime and 73-40 after three periods.

"I think we learned to compete at the level that was necessary to win in this conference," said Gaiters head coach Craig Norman. "I talked a lot about winning individual battles, digging in. We put more emphasis on winning 50-50 battles, winning possessions on both sides of the ball against the person you're matched up against and the girls really bought in and they answered the bell."

Gaiters rookie Marie-Evrardine Berrouette (Montreal, Que./Dawson College) picked up her second double-double in the past three games, as she scored 10 points and grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds. Maude Archambault (Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures, Que./Collège Montmorency) was the other Gaiter in double figures, with 11 points.

"Obviously it was a great weekend for Bishop's basketball," said Norman. "Concordia is ranked No. 10 in the country, [we] beat them back-to-back. Mara was terrific, an all-Canadian performance on Thursday night with 36. Tonight, Edith was magical, I thought. She had 21 but she controlled things. Ashley had a slow start but the game was wide open so Ashley got some clean looks. Marie had a great game with 16 rebounds and 10 points, just a huge, huge game from a rookie."

Concordia (9-6, 3-5 RSEQ) was led by Caroline Task, who scored 28 points on 9-of-20 shooting. Coralie Dumont had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Jazlin Barker also scored 14 for the Stingers.

The Gaiters shot 43.5 per cent from the field, while holding Concordia to 38.1. Bishop's recorded seven blocks, one short of their season high, with Milhomme, Berrouette and Mara Marchizotti (Buenos Aires, Argentina/) each making a pair.

"I was very pleased with the back-to-back performance and now we have to get ready for McGill," Norman added.

Bishop's is next in action on Friday, when they host the McGill Martlets at the Mitchell Gym. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
