Game 1: vs York Lions 55 BU 73

Box Score

Quality 73-55 win over York at the Ryerson Tournament in Toronto. We played without the services of our best defending, top athlete Marie Berrouette (Montreal, Que./Dawson College) - she'll be back. We gang rebounded fiercely and defended without fouling. Our wings once again led us in scoring: Maude Archambault (St-Augustine-de-Desmaures, Que./Cegep de Montmorency) and Ashley Milhomme (Repentigny, Que./Cegep de Montmorency) had 18 each. Huge contribution from Eve-Marie Houle (Chateau-Richer, Que./Cegep de Ste-Foy), who has great hands and had career highs with 28 minutes, 14 points and 13 rebounds. Amaiquen Siciliano (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Velez Sarsfield)  had 13 points and 10 rebounds, not bad for a 5'2 guard!!!! And then there's Metchline Gabelus (Montreal, Que./Champlain College St-Lambert), what can you say, played her heart out, gets her nose bloodied, grabs 11 OFFENSIVE rebounds and kicks out to shooters. Metch had 4 points, 15 rebounds, 2 assists and 4 steals, whatever it takes.... she does!!

We received a super spark of the bench from first year guard Jayne-Laure Dumerjean (Montreal, Que./Cegep de Montmorency) who played 17 quality minutes scoring 4 points, 1 assist, 2 steals and 0 fouls!
We are playing hard, not fouling, rebounding, and moving the ball. We still miss too many free throws and layups, we will keep working.

Game 2: vs Ryerson Rams 78 BU 56

Box Score

Tonight we played one of the top 3 teams in Canada. They followed their game plan very well, they outmuscled us inside, they shot the ball better than we did and they took the ball to the basket stronger than we did. They outplayed us. All credit to Coach Carly Clarke and her Ryerson players.

We will get better from this experience. We could only play 7 players tonight; it's just not enough, not against a great opponent. We will be better because of this experience. Tomorrow we face another top 5 team- Saskatchewan coached by Lisa Thomaidis, Head Coach of Canada's national senior team. That's why we came here, to get better and we will!

Ashley Milhomme (Repentigny, Que./Cegep de Montmorency) had 18 points. Amaiquen Siciliano (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Velez Sarsfield) had 13 points, 2 assists and 2 steals.  Maude Archambault (St-Augustine-de-Desmaures, Que./Cegep de Montmorency) had 12 points. Metchline Gabelus (Montreal, Que./Champlain College St-Lambert) had 5 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists (and a great comeback from a blow to her throat that would have sidelined most individuals, her toughness is inspirational). The bench player who achieved career highs today was first year post Marika Couturier (Val-d'Or, Que./Cegep de Montmorency) with 15 minutes, 8 points and 3 rebounds.

We know we have to do a much better job at the free throw line and finishing stronger with layups. Our season is a process and we are determined to compete better.

Game 3: vs Saskatchewan Huskies 77 BU 66

Box Score

If our ladies were anyone else, this would have been a 30 point blowout loss. It was our third game in 3 days, we don't have much depth and we were without the services of our most athletic starter, centre Marie Berrouette (Montreal, Que./Dawson College). We found a way to complete against one of the best teams in Canada and their 6'2 All Canadian centre. We cajoled quality minutes out of our 2nd, 3rd and even 4th string post players and they PLAYED THEIR HEARTS OUT!!!!

We went down 16-11 at the end of the first quarter, we closed it in the second quarter losing that one 20-18, so we were down 36-29 at half. Coach Norman had some choice remarks at halftime telling the ladies that it was NOT OKAY to think that we wouldn't win this game!! I was inspired!!!! We played our best third quarter of the season beating the mighty Huskies 19-13 and they started to panic; they even had to change their defense and go zone against our quickness and shooters. Going into the fourth quarter down 1 point we saw our ladies believing in our collective efforts. Talent and depth took over in the fourth. Saskatchewan went on a run and we couldn't answer it. Saskatchewan's height was overwhelming.... at every position. It is remarkable to lose by 11, 77-66 and get out rebounded 50-29. They had 21 more chances than we did!!!

Ama Siciliano was brilliant playing all 40 minutes (and she was the number 1 item on their scouting report) scoring a game high 22 points, 3 rebounds and 2 steals. Veteran, Maude Archambault (St-Augustine-de-Desmaures, Que./Cegep de Montmorency) also played 40 minutes and was both in the backcourt AND the 4 spot due to our foul trouble. She scored 18 points, had 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Metch Gabelus found herself in very, very early foul trouble, this put our game plan out the door,  but when Metch went back, she played her best offensive game in a BU uniform scoring a much needed 11 points, grabbing 5 rebounds, adding 4 assists and getting 3 steals in 23 minutes. Ashley Milhomme (Repentigny, Que./Cegep de Montmorency) could not get her 3 point game going but she still managed to contribute 11 points and 6 rebounds. Two first year ladies who do not have much experience gave us quality minutes. Sarah Peirson (Kingston, Ont./La Salle S.S.) defended and competed against someone much taller and better than her not giving an inch, I was so proud of her. And quickness machine Jayne-Laure Dumerjean (Montreal, Que./Cegep de Montmorency) gave us 18 minutes and learned so much.

So yes, we went 1-2 but we left Toronto a much, much better team. We played great competition; WE COMMITTED only 27 turnovers in 3 games, what an incredible stat!!!! We are on the right road. We continue to get better each day. Thank goodness we get to rest now. Thank you for your support! Go Gaiters!!!

Ryerson (congrats BU alum Coach Carly Clarke- your team is awesome!) won the tournament, McMaster finished 2nd (they beat Saskatchewan by 1 at the buzzer the night before), 3. Saskatchewan, 4. Bishop's, 5.Regina, 6. Western, 7. McGill and 8. York.

Next Up
The Gaiters will face Bentley University at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 1 and Saint Anselm College on Nov. 2 at 4 p.m. The Gaiters complete schedule is available here.
