Stingers Stuff Gaiters on Thanksgiving Friday

SHERBROOKE, Que. – After a tight first 40 minutes, the Bishop's Gaiters men's rugby team was unable to contain the juggernaut Concordia Stingers.  A late try in the first half gave Concordia a 22-13 advantage and they never looked back rolling to a 48-16 victory in the RSEQ University conference on Friday night in Lennoxville.

The victory was Concordia's fourth straight in 2018, and yet again in convincing fashion.  The reigning conference champions have now outscored opponents 184-26.

How it happened
Concordia struck first with a try but were unable to convert.  Tyler Murphy (Bromont, Que./Massey Vanier H.S.), the RSEQ's leading scorer, answered for the Gaiters, booting through a penalty from over 40 yards.  Jonathan Banks replied with a penalty of his own for the Stingers before Murphy again booted through three more points.

Concordia scored and extended their advantage to 15-6 with a try and conversion. Then this happened:

Gaiter veteran Robbie McGovern picked off a Stingers pass and raced away 70 yards for an uncontested try that Murphy converted. The Concordia lead was cut to just 15-13.

A gaff at the last play of the first half on a scrum at the Bishop's five-yard line gave Concordia an easy try and a 22-13 lead.

After the break, it was all Stingers. They scored nine minutes into the stanza and again six minutes after that to extend their lead to 34-13. Murphy added his third penalty of the game for Bishop's but that was the last points the Gaiters put on the board.  Two more tries from Concordia made the final 48-16.
