LENNOXVILLE, Que. – The Bishop's Gaiters opened the women's basketball home season with a 69-65 win over the UQAM Citadins in RSEQ conference play at the Mitchell Gym, Saturday.
Eve-Marie Houle (Chateau-Richer, Que./Cegep de Ste-Foy) got the Gaiters off to a hot start after hitting two three-pointers in a row late in the first quarter, helping the Gaiters to an 18-8 lead after 10 minutes. She finished with a career-high 13 points, including 3-for-5 from long range.
Metchline Gabelus (Montreal, Que./Champlain College St-Lambert) then took over for the Gaiters, posting 21 points, 12 rebounds and five assists. Maude Archambault (St-Augustine-de-Desmaures, Que./Cegep de Montmorency) tallied 20 points of her own, whileMarie Berrouette (Montreal, Que./Dawson College) had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Berouette also had a clutch block with time running down in the 4th quarter to seal the Gaiters victory. Gabelus, Berrouette and Archambault each played 40 minutes for the Gaiters.
After taking a 36-20 lead into halftime, the second half started with Archambault knocking down a three before the Citadins went on a run to cut the Gaiters lead to under 10. The Citadins pulled close to the Gaiters in the second half, but were unable to ever take the lead.
Citadins centre Inga Aleksaite finished the game with 17 points, eight rebounds and five assists to lead the visitors.
Next up: The Gaiters will face off against the McGill Martlets on Thursday November 15th, in Montreal.
