Laval outlasts Gaiters in Sunday Matinee

Box Score QUEBEC CITY – The No. 5 Laval Rouge et Or and the Bishop's Gaiters women's basketball teams have played three memorable contests this season to date. Sunday afternoon's RSEQ University contest in Quebec City was another one of those back and forth affairs.  Tied with just over three minutes remaining, the veterans of the Rouge et Or refused to be upset by the Gaiters on their home court for the second time this year.  Laval outlasted the Gaiters down the stretch and won 81-72.

A slow start saw Bishop's grab a 16-15 lead after the first stanza. Defence took centre stage in the second quarter, as Laval was able to even the score 26-26 heading to the break.  The rest allowed both sides to find their scoring touch and let loose in a wild third frame where each team scored 24 points.

Tied at 50 entering the final frame when Bishop's caught fire early on.  They extended their lead to five before Laval went on their own run and grabbed a four-point advantage.  Maude Archambault (Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures, Que./Collège Montmorency) scored four straight for Bishop's to tie the game back at 68-68 with 3:15 to go. However, the nation's fifth-ranked team pulled away in the final minutes as they connected on a number of clutch shots while Bishop's was unable to answer and the Rouge et Or finished off the 81-72 victory.

Bishop's still controls their own playoff destiny, but will have to wait another day before celebrating their first post-season appearance since 2012. At 6-7, they sit alone in third place in the RSEQ with three games remaining. UQAM and Concordia are tied for fourth at 4-9.  The win propels Laval to first place in RSEQ at 9-3.  McGill is in second at 9-4.

The Gaiters and Rouge et Or will not have long to work on any adjustments as the two teams tip-off again on Tuesday, Feb. 13 at 6 p.m. in Mitchell Gym.
