Gaiters close out regular season with loss to Concordia

Ken Beaulieu led all scorers with 21 points as the Concordia Stingers outlasted the Bishop's Gaiters, 78-68, in Quebec university men's basketball action at the Mitchell Gym in Lennoxville, Friday. The fifth-year forward went 9-for-14 from the field, as he helped the Stingers clinch second place in the conference, and home-court advantage in the semi-final round.

Bishop's (5-21, 5-11 RSEQ) was led by Kevin Davis (Baltimore, Md./Digital Harbor H.S.), as the Baltimore native hit a career-best four three-pointers on his way to a 17-point performance. David Belanger (Sherbrooke, Que./Champlain-St. Lambert), playing his final home game as a Gaiter, had 12 points and led all players with nine rebounds. Abdul Kamane (Montreal, Que./Vanier College) and Jordan Thornhill (St-Lazare, Que.) were the other Gaiters in double figures, with 10 points each.

For Concordia (17-12, 10-5 RSEQ), Ricardo Monge also scored 14 points while Schneider Suffard added 11.

The Gaiters outrebounded Concordia 39-32, but committed 20 turnovers, to the Stingers' 16. For the game, Concordia shot 52.5 per cent, while they held the Gaiters to 42 per cent shooting.

Concordia got out to an quick start, leading 29-11 after the first quarter as they shot 60 per cent from the field. The Stingers led throughout the game, holding a 42-27 lead at halftime, and a 63-42 edge after three quarters. The Gaiters did chip away at the lead throughout the fourth quarter, but could not get any closer than 10 points.

The Gaiters finish the regular season in fourth place in the RSEQ with a 5-11 league record, their best since 2015, and will return to the postseason on Wednesday, as they visit the McGill Redmen in a RSEQ semifinal in Montreal. Concordia, for its part, will host third-seeded Laval in the conference semifinal, also on Wednesday night.
