No.5 Gaiters back in action at home Thursday; away Sunday

LENNOXVILLE, Que. – It is arguably the hottest ticket in town.  The Bishop's Gaiters women's basketball team is ranked fifth in U SPORTS.  They are back in action in Lennoxville for the final time before the Christmas break on Thursday, Nov. 21 at 6 p.m. when they host McGill.  On Sunday they travel to Quebec City for a heavyweight tilt with the No.9 Laval Rouge et Or at 1 p.m.

After a solid pre-season the Gaiters continued to roll in their first weekend of RSEQ action. They earned a convincing 26-point win at Concordia and a 71-67 victory at home against UQAM. Rookie Jael Kabunda (Montreal, Que./College Montmorency) led the way Thursday with 32 points, she backed it up with 10 points on Saturday and earned both Bishop's and RSEQ Female Athlete of the Week honours.

Amaiquen Siciliano (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Velez Sarsfield) also continued her strong play on Saturday. She scored 28 points including a pair of key three-pointers down the stretch to secure the victory.

After winning seven consecutive RSEQ championships, McGill's run came to an end last year as Laval was crowned champion. The 2017 U SPORTS national champions are always dangerous in the RSEQ, however have struggled out of the gate.

They lost their first two conference games and scored just 73 points total in the two contests.

Bishop's is 2-23 in their last 25 against McGill and the Martlets have won seven in a row, including all four they played last year.

The defending RSEQ champions are picking up where they left off in conference play. After a sluggish pre-season by their standards (4-2 against U SPORTS competition), Laval has started the year at 2-0 with wins over McGill and Concordia.  Both victories were by single digits.

Laval will have a new-look as 2018-19 U SPORTS MVP Sarah-Jean Marois graduated.  Former Gaiter Maude Archambault (St-Augustine-de-Desmaures, Que./Cegep de Montmorency) now dons the red and gold as she continues her studies in grad school. She scored 26 points in the Rouge et Or's win over Concordia.  Last year's U SPORTS defensive player of the year Khaleann Caron-Goudreau is back for Laval and is making her presence felt. She's grabbed 17 rebounds in each of the first two games.

Since 2013, the Rouge et Or hold a 22-2 edge in the series, including sweeping all four games last year.  The teams went 2-2 in 2017-18.

Next Up
After the pair this weekend, Bishop's will wrap-up the first semester with one more game at McGill on Saturday, Nov. 30.
