Gaiters tip-off with top-ranked Rouge et Or twice in 24 hours

LENNOXVILLE, Que. – The Bishop's Gaiters women's basketball team will have their hands full this Friday and Saturday night when they play a pair of games against the No. 1 team in U SPORTS, the Laval Rouge et Or. Friday the teams' tip-off in Quebec City and Saturday in Mitchell Gym in Lennoxville. Saturday's game is the annual Shoot for the Cure. Both games are set for 6 p.m.
 
Leading Laval                             
How good is Laval? They are 11-0 in RSEQ play and 20-0 overall against U SPORTS competition. They are the only undefeated team in the country. In conference play as a team they lead in virtually every statistical category, have outscored their opponents by 249 points and clinched first place.
 
They boast the top three players in the RSEQ in field goal percentage and seven of the top eight. In the first meeting this year the Rouge et Or had 10 players play 10-plus minutes, in the second game eight players played 11 minutes or more.
 
Last week Laval dominated McGill 65-47 in Montreal and 83-38 in Quebec City.
 
Bishop's Beat
The Gaiters return from their bye week prepared for the Rouge et Or challenge. At 2-10 they are in fifth place in the conference, a half-game behind UQAM (2-9) for the final playoff spot.
 
Gaiters' senior Maude Archambault (St-Augustine-de-Desmaures, Que./Cegep de Montmorency) continues to lead the way at the offensive end. She's third in scoring in the conference with 14.7 points per game. Rookie point guard Amaiquen Siciliano (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Velez Sarsfield), who joined the Gaiters after Christmas is starting to get comfortable with the RSEQ game. The Argentinian Junior National Team member has scored 12.2 points per game in the six she's played so far.
 
Super sophomore Marie Berrouette (Montreal, Que./Dawson College) is also making her presence felt. She's averaged 11.5 rebounds per game including 4.3 at the offensive end. She also plays a team-high 38.3 minutes per game.
 
Last time out the Gaiters lost a pair of games to McGill.

Next Up
This week's home-and-home with the Rouge et Or is the last of its kind for the Gaiters. They play one game a week for the remaining two weeks and undoubtable have Feb. 23 circled on their calendar when they head to Montreal to face the UQAM Citadins. Next week Bishop's hosts the Concordia Stingers on Sat. Feb. 16 in what is senor's night in Mitchell Gym.
