MCKINNEY, Tx. – It was not the opening game the Bishop's Gaiters women's hockey team had envisioned but they did what they had to and grabbed a 2-1 win over the Adrian College Bulldogs on Wednesday in their opener of the 2019 ACHA Nationals in Frisco, Tx.
Bishop's is the No.1 seed out of the east while Adrian is No.6 from the west.
The Gaiters controlled play in the first period. They hit two posts and outshot the Bulldogs 16-8 but were only able to find the back of the net once. That came off the stick of
Kayla LeTouzel (Vanleek Hill, Ont./St. Mary's C.H.S.).
LeTouzel buried her second of the game in the second period to put Bishop's up 2-0.
Momentum changed late in the stanza and the Bulldogs got on the board at the 2-1 mark after the Gaiters were unable to clear their zone. The period ended that way however, two Gaiters sat in the penalty box.
Jade Shushu Saulnier-Cyr got the start between the pipes and was key as Bishop's killed off the two-person advantage early in the frame. Both teams had chances down the stretch but no one capitalized and the Gaiters earned their first victory in the tournament.
Bishop's is back in action on Thursday at 1 p.m. when they take on Iowa State at 1 p.m. CDT.
