QUEBEC CITY – It was 60 minutes of solid, defensively sound soccer against one of the nation's top teams and a squad that had erupted for 13 goals in their first two games, however in the end the Bishop's Gaiters could not hold on and lost 2-0 to the Laval Rouge et Or on Tuesday night in Quebec City.
The loss drops Bishop's to 1-3-0 while No. 5 Laval improves to 3-0-1 in the young RSEQ University Women's Soccer season.
Bishop's had its chances in the pouring rain in the first half but the hosts shut the door. The Gaiters held tight and limited the Rouge et Or's chances. It was scoreless at the break with Bishop's holding a 4-3 edge in shots.
In the 65
th minute, Laval was awarded a free kick not far outside the box and after a mad scramble Kim Tremblay booted the loose ball past Gaiters' keeper
Mehana Heins (Ottawa, Ont./Merivale S.S.). They added their second in stoppage time in the second half when the RSEQ's leading scorer Jessica Bunker finished off a two-on-one break.
Mathilde Benoît-Fortier was the game MVP for Bishop's while Mirelle Patry earns the honour for Laval.
The foes will play the back end of their home-and-home series on Friday night on Coulter Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
