LENNOXVILLE, Que. – Five fourth quarter goals including a hat trick by
Mathew Paterson (Pointe Claire, Que./John Abott College) was not enough as the Bishop's Gaiters fell 10-8 to McGill on Homecoming Thursday night in Lennoxville. The CUFLA East lacrosse matchup was yet another instant classic between the rivals.
McGill jumped out to an early 2-0 lead but the Gaiters fought back to tie the game at 2-2 after 15 minutes.
The next two stanzas were all McGill. They scored twice in the second quarter and four times in the third compared to just a single tally from the Gaiters. The visitors were poised to spoil the Bishop's homecoming party as they led 8-3 after 45 minutes.
Xavier Perron (Sherbrooke, Que./) scored 2:01 into the final quarter and the floodgates opened for the Gaiters who did their part to make the 2019 edition of the annual game yet another classic. Just over three minutes later
Mitchell Broussard (Bedford, N.S./Charles P. Allen H.S.) scored his third of the year. McGill answered with 8:16 remaining to restore a four-goal advantage.
That is when Paterson took over.
With the Gaiters' keeper
Matt Wolf (Rye, NH/Gould Academy) out to double team, McGill found the empty net with 30 seconds remaining, then controlled the ensuing faceoff to seal the 10-8 win.
The loss drops Bishop's to 1-5 on the year while McGill improves to 5-0. Thursday's game was the sixth of the last seven Thursday night Coulter Field Homecoming classics to be decided two goals or less.
Gaiters head coach Rob Engelken post game.
