HALIFAX – Turnovers. The Bishop's Gaiters were unable to overcome their turnover trouble on Friday night in Halifax as they dropped a 30-13 contest to the St. Mary's Huskies in AUS Football.
Bishop's threw three interceptions, lost two fumbles, including one on the Huskies' 1-yard line, and were stopped three times on third down. St. Mary's parlayed that into 18 points.
There were however many bright spots for Bishop's who were within striking distance until an 85-yard pick-6 in the final minute of the game.
Louis-Philippe Gregoire (Jonquière, Que./Cégep de Jonquière) ran for 130 yards on 26 carries and
Nathan Walker (Brampton, Ont./St. Roch C.S.S.) caught seven passes for 111 yards.
Liam Kennedy (Nepean, Ont./St. Joseph H.S.) took over at quarterback for freshman
Charles Aubry (Laval, Que./College Lionel-Groulx). Aubry was knocked out of the game in the first quarter.
Kennedy finished 11-22 for 185 yards through the air. He had a touchdown and two interceptions.
The Gaiters' defense also had an interception and a forced three fumbles, one of which they recovered and sacked SMU quarterback Joshua Shim six times.
Walker added to his stat line by returning punts. He took one back 91 yards to tilt field possession and finished with nine for 194 yards. Nicolas Cartagenise also had a hard 24-yard punt return to set up the Gaiters' lone major of the night.
St. Mary's was penalized 20 times for 252 yards compared to just seven penalties costing Bishop's 49 yards.
Shim went 11-23 with a touchdown and a pick for the hosts who with the win improve to 2-0. Bishop's falls to 1-2 after the loss.
Next up the Gaiters host the Mount Allison Mounties (0-2) on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 2 p.m. on Coulter Field.
The Bishop's Gaiters' family wishes all the best to the St. Mary's Huskies and all their AUS colleagues who are in the path of Hurricane Dorian. Stay safe.
