LENNOXVILLE, Que. - The purple and white increased their season record to 7-0 after defeating the Carleton Ravens in a CUFLA East Playoff on Coulter Field on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Gaiters clinch a championship berth and will be Baggataway bound next weekend for the first time since 2016.
The Ravens came out of the gates quickly, opening the game's scoring two minutes into the first quarter. Bishop's responded with a goal from
Jacob Gasperetti (Ottawa, ON/Notre Dame H.S.) but the visitors once again took the lead. The opening quarter ended with the Gaiters holding a narrow 4-3 lead. The purple and white sparked the offense in the second quarter and didn't look back, dominating the closing three quarters and scoring 14 goals in the process. Defensively, the Gaiters held Carleton to just three goals in the final 60 minutes to fnish the game with an 18-6 scoreline.
Mitchell Broussard (Bedford, NS/Charles P. Allen H.S.) was the leading goal scorer for the Gaiters with five while
Jacob Gasperetti (Ottawa, ON/Notre Dame H.S.) and
Hank Wulder (Victoria, BC/Claremont S.S.) both added another four. For fifth-year senior,
Sam Firth (Ottawa, ON/Nepean H.S.), today's contest was a monumental one. Firth scored two goals in his final game on Coulter Field, his second of which was his 100th career goal as a Gaiter. The two goals bring Firth's 2021 season goal count to forty-three, a league leading total.
The messaging from the Bishop's coaching staff this week was to play a complete 80 minutes and the purple and white did exactly that. Head coach, Rob Engelken, was happy with the team's performance but has shifted the focus to next weekend's game.
