LENNOXVILLE, Que. –
Gabrielle Rousseau (Sherbrooke, Que./Champlain-Lennoxville) scored 9:58 into the third period to put the Bishop's Gaiters up 4-3 over the Montreal Carabins, a lead they held onto for their first U SPORTS women's hockey victory in just their second game.
Rousseau's tally was her second of the game and sent the 401 spectators Jane and Eric Molson Arena into a frenzy as the Gaiters celebrated their home opener.
After a pre-game ceremony to mark the occasion, Montreal scored first 8:18 into the game. The Gaiters responded less than a minute later with Rousseau's first mark. Catherine Berger-Dube beat the clock when she slapped home a power play goal with two seconds remaining to put the hosts up 2-1 at the first break.
Montreal, a perennial powerhouse, took control early in the second netting goals at 4:59 and 6:36 marks to regain the lead. Jamie Asporpotamitis leveled everything at 3-3 when she scored midway through the second stanza.
The game hung in the balance until Rousseau's marker, the lone score in the third period. The Carabins pushed late but Gaiters' goalie
Charley Wing (Huntsville, Ont./Mother Teresa C.S.S.) held strong. She made 31 saves en route to her first U SPORTS victory.
Rousseau was named the game's first star, Amelie Poire-Lehoux from Montreal the second star and Bishop's
Pascale Desmarais (Toronto, Ont./Ursula Franklin Academy) the thrid star.
The win evens the Gaiters record at 1-1 while Montreal falls to 0-2 in the young season.
Bishop's is next in action on Saturday at 2 p.m. when they travel to Montreal to face the Concordia Stingers.
