Gaiters Stun Sherbrooke on Halloween Sunday

SHERBROOKE, Que. – Senior standout Erika Scott (Dewittville, QC/John Abbott College) scored a try on the final play of the game to propel the Bishop's Gaiters women's rugby team to a 10-7 victory over cross-town rival Sherbrooke in an RSEQ University Consolation semifinal.

"The team did awesome," said Gaiters' head coach Tom Whyld.  "We stuck to our philosophies and stood strong on defense. I'm so happy for this group to get this win."

The game was moved the Stade de L'Universite de Sherbrooke because of conditions and the natural grass provided an additional challenge in the wind and rain. Bishop's controlled the play early but were unable to score any points.  The teams entered halftime knotted at 0-0.

The second stanza started with Bishop's continuing to control the play.  They were able to find pay dirt just after the 50-minute mark to grab a 5-0 lead.  Sherbrooke responded and grabbed momentum but were not able to score until the 76th minute.  A successful conversion left the Vert et Or up 7-5 with just minutes remaining.  The Gaiters refused to lose on Halloween Sunday and pushed back.  After forcing a turnover, Scott scored her game-ending try, gave Bishop's a 10-7 win, and sent the Gaiters into the RSEQ Consolation Final.

Bishop's will now head to Concordia on Saturday, Nov. 6 for a tilt with the Stingers.  Concordia punched their ticket with a convincing 69-5 win over McGill in the other semifinal on Saturday.
