LENNOXVILLE, Que. -
Matthis Guerut (Paris, France/Cegep de Thetford) scored the final basket of the game with 27 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Bishop's Gaiters a tight 76-73 victory over the visiting Laval Rouge et Or in overtime in the 2021-22 season opener at Mitchell Gymnasium.
Prior to the game, the Gaiters celebrated their 2019-20 RSEQ Men's Basketball Championship and yet more heroics took place with a capacity crowd in Mitchell Gym.
Ibrahim Ngom (Montreal, Que./Vanier College),
Daniel Levitt (Montreal, Que./), Guerut and
Carl Jacob (Sherbrooke, Que./Champlain-Lennoxville) were the Gaiters' leading scorers and combined for 66 points.
Carl Jacob (Sherbrooke, Que./Champlain-Lennoxville) added 10 rebounds to his 14 points to record the only double-double of the game.
The game went back and forth with Bishop's grabbing narrow advantages at each quarter breaks.
Ultimately the contest came down to the final few minutes and Laval had the ball with a chance to win at the end of the game but were not able to get a good shot off.
In overtime defense reigned supreme as no one was able to score in the first half of the period. Down the stretch the teams traded blows before Guerut tipped in a
Connor Kelly (Brockville, Ont./St. Mary's C.S.S.) missed jumper to put the Gaiters up for good.

The Gaiters will head to to Concordia and McGill on Thursday November 18th and Saturday November 20th. Game times are set for 8PM and 6PM, respectively.
