LENNOXVILLE, Que. - The Gaiters opened the 2021-22 season against the Carleton Ravens in Ottawa on October 29th, 2021 and now, in the third week of the season, turned the tables at home, defeating the Ravens 3-1.
The Gaiters and Ravens were quick out of the gates but were unable to create any true scoring opportunities, with much of the opening 20 minutes being played between the blue lines. The Gaiters were assessed three minor penalties throughout the opening period and were out-shot 13-5 as a result but were able to hold their own and entered the first intermission deadlocked at 0-0.
Coming out of the break, both teams maintained the intensity from the first period. The Carleton Ravens were sent to the box five minutes into the second period and the Gaiters took advantage when
Marie-Camille Théorêt (Magog, Que., Champlain-Lennoxville) found the back of the net on the power play, her first goal of the season, to give the home squad a 1-0 lead. A series of penalties just after the goal provided the Gaiters with a four on three but it was the Ravens that took advantage. Nicole Hunter scored an unassisted shorthanded goal for the Ravens to tie the contest. The Gaiters out-shot the Ravens 14-9 but, at the end of the second stanza, the game remained 1-1.
In the third period, the Gaiters maintained their discipline with the focus on earning their second win of the season. Bishop's stayed out of the box and were able to capitalize when the Ravens were down a skater.
Jessica Bélanger (Sherbrooke, Que., Champlain-Lennoxville), the Gaiters' captain, scored twelve minutes into the third period on the power play to give the Gaiters their second lead of the day.
Majorie Bolduc (Saint-Ephrem-de-Beauce, Que., Champlain-Lennoxville) and
Maude Pépin (Pont-Rouge, Que., Cegep Limoilou) were credited with assists.
Noémie Garneau (Quebec City, Que., Cegep Limoilou) put the game away for the Gaiters when she added another goal in the final two minutes of the game on a pass from
Maude Pépin (Pont-Rouge, Que., Cegep Limoilou) to make the score 3-1 which stood as the final.
