OTTAWA, Ont. - The Ottawa Gee-Gees defeated the Bishop's Gaiters 5-2 on Friday night in Ottawa in RSEQ University Women's Hockey.
The Gee-Gees got on the board early, scoring two goals from Arianne Gagnon and Katherine Birkby in the game's opening minute to take a 2-0 lead into the first break.
In the second stanza, Ariane Aubin and Sophie Gareau found the back of the net on the power play to extend the home team's lead to 4-0. Fifteen minutes into the period, the Gaiters responded with a power play goal of their own from captain
Jessica Bélanger (Sherbrooke, Que., Champlain-Lennoxville). Gabrielle Rousseau (Sherbrooke, Que./Champlain-Lennoxville) and
Marie-Camille Théorêt (Magog, Que., Champlain-Lennoxville) recorded the assists. The purple and white finished out the second strong and continued the momentum into the final period of the contest.
Angelique Page beat the Gee-Gees netminder three minutes and forty-nine seconds into the third on assists from
Pascale Desmarais (Toronto, Ont./Ursula Franklin Academy) and
Noémie Thibault (Sherbrooke, Que., Champlain-Lennoxville) to narrow Ottawa's lead to two. The home team added one more goal from Kathleen Reedman to make the final 5-2.
Bishop's outshot Ottawa 20-18 throughout the contest but were also assessed eight minor penalties throughout the 60 minutes of play. First-year goaltender
Aglaé René de Cotret (Rouyn-Noranda, Que., Champlain-Lennoxville) made 13 saves in the loss.
