SACKVILLE, N.B. - In the regular season finale, the Bishop's Gaiters football team dropped an 18-2 decision to the Mount Allison Mounties in AUS action on Saturday November 6 in New Brunswick.
Both teams started the contest slowly and were deadlocked after the opening fifteen minutes. The Gaiters got on the scoreboard first late in the second quarter, on a rouge from
Yani Gouadfel (Mitry-Mory, France/Cégep de Thetford). Mount Allison equalized when James Parker scored a rouge for the Mounties. The two teams entered the halftime break tied 1-1.
The Mounties got their first lead of the day at the halfway point of the third quarter when Parker hit a 39-yard field goal. Five minutes later, Adam Bennett found the endzone for the home team on a 5-yard run to extend the lead to 11-1 after 45 minutes of play. Bishop's added another rouge in the fourth quarter, this one by
Noah Laursen (Calgary, AB/Bishop Carroll H.S.), but were unable to break through the Mounties defense. Morie Kamara added the final score of the game for the Mounties on a 44-yard connection from Julian Wytinck to make the final score 18-2 in favour of the home team.
Despite the score, both teams had near equal first downs throughout the contest and combined for over 500 yards of offense.
Mason McGriskin (North Bay, ON/West Ferris S.S.) and
Liam Kennedy (Nepean, ON/St. Joseph H.S.) split quarterbacking duties for the Gaiters. McGriskin completed 8 of 12 passes for 62 yards while
Liam Kennedy (Nepean, ON/St. Joseph H.S.) went 7 for 12 for an additional 58 yards. No back surpassed 53-yards rushing on the day.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Gaiters were led by
Jakob Matheson (Ottawa, ON/Earl of March S.S.) (6.5 tackles) and
Liam Patton (Thornhill, ON/Bill Crothers S.S.) (6 tackles and 1 tackle for a loss of three yards) while Graeme Stevens totalled 9 tackles for the Mounties.
The loss drops the Gaiters to 2-4 while the Mounties extended their 2021 record to 5-1. The result had no implications on the standings with both teams previously securing a spot in the 2021 AUS post-season.
