Former Gaiter (1986-91) and 2016 Wall of Distinction inductee, Cynthia Johnston, has been named as one of six inductees to the Greater Saint John Sports Hall of Fame for 2021.
During her time at Bishop's University, the Rothesay local won the honour of Bishop's Female Athlete of the Year four times, was twice named a conference Most Valuable Player and was also a three-time CIAU All-Canadian. Playing a mix of small forward and power forward, Johnston was known for her defensive skills and focus on the court. In 1990 and 1991, Johnston helped the Gaiters win the QUBL Championship.
Following graduation, Johnston played nine years of semi-professional and professional basketball in Belgium, Switzerland, Germany and Spain. The former Bishop's standout was also a member of the Canadian National Program for 14 years, was selected to the Canadian Women's Basketball Team and competed at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. In 2020, Johnston's talents and outstanding career were recognized when she was named as one of the Top 100 U SPORTS Women's Basketball Players of the Century.
