SHERBROOKE, Que. - Back on the field for the first time since 2019, the Gaiters men's rugby team captured their first win of the season in the cross town rivalry game. Playing the role of the visiting team at Université de Sherbrooke on Sunday afternoon, the Gaiters defeated the Vert et Or 47-5.
The Gaiters came out of the gates strong and fast and maintained possession for much of the first half. The purple and white led 24-0 at the end of the first half and continued the momentum into the second forty, scoring an additional 23 points and allowing only one score by the Vert et Or in the final moments of the game. Despite Sherbrooke's attempts to break through the purple wall, the defense maintained their physicality and continually denied Sherbrooke opportunities to gain ground. On the offensive side of the ball, BU showcased their speed and agility which allowed for six Gaiters to get on the scoresheet.
Junior,
Kyle Corrigan (Ottawa, ON/St. Paul H.S.), was the lead scorer for the purple and white, scoring two tries and making four converts, accounting for 18 of the Gaiters' points. "Being back on the field was something the whole team has been looking forward to since the end of 2019. All of the work we've put in over the last two years will be put to the test in this new season," stated Corrigan. "We had a mix of new and returning players in today's lineup which will really help with our depth going forward."
When asked about next week's home opener game against, league-leading Concordia, Corrigan said that it's a game everyone is excited for and he has no doubt that the team will leave it all on the field.

The Gaiters look to improve their record as they host Concordia on Friday September 24th. The first game of the year on Coulter Field for the Gaiters is scheduled to start at 8PM.
