ANTIGONISH, N.S. – The Bishop's Gaiters fell behind early and their comeback bid came up short in the 2023 Loney Bowl. They fell 34-23 to the StFX X-Men in Antigonish on Saturday.
Gaiters' quarterback
Justin Quirion (Saint-Georges, QC/CEGEP de Levis) made his return after a three-game absence due to injury. He went 27-51 for 267 yards.
StFX jumped out to an early lead and held on as they claimed their third consecutive AUS Title. They led 17-3 after one quarter and 23-10 at halftime. Bishop's made a late push but it wasn't enough.
O'Shae HO-Sang scored a major on a 20 yard run for Bishop's midway through the second quarter to cut the hosts lead to 20-10 but it was as close as the Gaiters' got. The X-Men extended their advantage to as much as 34-10 before
Rene Zeevat (Merksplas, Belgium/Sackville High School) picked up a fumble and returned it 22 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Mason McGriskin (North Bay, ON/West Ferris S.S.) also found the end zone on a two-yard run for Bishop's.
With the loss, Bishop's season ends while the X-Men head to the Mitchell Bowl to face UBC.
