Christopher Kramer (Victoriaville, QC/Cégep de Thetford) forced a fumble and safety
Yani Gouadfel (Mitry-Mory, France/Cégep de Thetford) picked up the loose ball and ran 40 yards for a touchdown. That play was the difference in a Bishop's 18-10 win over the Mount Allison Mounties on a windy Saturday in Sackville, N.B.
Bishop's controlled most of the game but it hang in the balance into the fourth stanza.
The Gaiters outgained Mt.A 408 to 243 yards, ran 23 more plays, had 25 first downs compared to 9 by the hosts and had their offense on the field 37:37 to 21:22.
Bishop's took the opening kickoff with the wind at their back and gained the upper hand in field possession. Quarterback
Justin Quirion (Saint-Georges, QC/CEGEP de Levis) eventually connected with
Oliver Burnett (Fredericton, NB/Fredericton HS) for a 12-yard touchdown halfway through the opening quarter.
Mount Allison's lone offensive output came with a pick-6 four minutes later to level the score.
Xavier Gervais (Ottawa, ON/Cégep de l'Outaouais) booted through a 25-yard field goal for the lone score of the second stanza; that gave Bishop's a 10-7 lead at the break.
The Mounties tacked on a field goal with 4:24 to go in the third.
Following a Gervais missed field goal, the Gaiters held an 11-10 lead when the play of the game happened 3:08 into the final frame.
Bishop's was able to close out the contest with a goal line stand, capped by a Gouadfel interception.
The win is a third straight for Bishop's who now 3-1 and firmly in second place in the AUS. The Mounties fall to 1-3.
Quirion finished 22-31 for 258 yards a touchdown and an interception.
The Gaiters are back on Friday, Sept. 29 at 6 p.m. when they host the league-leading StFX X-Men (4-0) on Coulter Field with the Bigg Bowl on the line. Mount Allison travels to Acadia for a Saturday night match-up.
