CALGARY — The Bishop's Gaiters are headed to the U SPORTS Men's Basketball Championship final after holding off the Victoria Vikes 66–65 in a national semifinal on Saturday night at the Jack Simpson Gym.
Charles Robert (Vaudreuil-Dorion, QC/Suffield Academy) led Bishop's with 17 points and seven rebounds, while
Yanis Malanda (Paris, France/Vanier College) and Etienne Gagnon each recorded double-doubles to help the Gaiters improve to 2–0 in the tournament and secure a place in Sunday's title game against the Carleton Ravens.
Bishop's used a strong third quarter to take control, shooting 50 per cent from the field and outscoring Victoria 24–16 to build a nine-point lead entering the fourth. Gagnon scored eight of his 10 points in the period, and
Zach John (Scarborough, ON/Central Technical School) added seven off the bench as the Gaiters stretched the margin to their largest lead of the night at 10.
Malanda finished with 13 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, while Gagnon added 10 points and 10 boards. John scored 14 off the bench and
Tiernan McDougall (Vancouver, BC/Champlain College Lennoxville) chipped in seven as Bishop's reserves outscored Victoria's 21–10.
Victoria closed the gap in the fourth quarter behind six points from Geoffrey James, but the Gaiters' defence held firm in the final minute. Bishop's forced two turnovers in the closing possessions, and the Vikes' final shot at the buzzer missed to seal the win.
Bishop's will now appear in the national championship game for the first time since 1998, when the Gaiters captured their lone U SPORTS title.
