Schedule

Return to Play Guidelines

The Bishop’s Sports Medicine team uses the following guidelines as outlined in the Concussion Census Statement from the 4th International Conference on Concussions. These steps are done under the guidance of the Sports Medicine doctor and are supervised by a certified Athletic Therapist.

As soon as an athlete presents with symptoms or we suspect a concussion, the athlete is immediately removed from play and evaluated.

The following steps are done with a minimum of 24 hours between steps. Please note that the athlete must remain asymptomatic for at least 24 hours in order to progress to the next step:
  • Step 1: Cognitive and physical rest
  • Step 2: Biking for 15 – 20 mins at 70% max effort
  • Step 3: Running/Sprinting for 20-30 minutes
  • Step 4: Non-contact practice. At this point, the student-athlete can also return to progressive strength training.
  • Step 5: Full-contact following medical team clearance
  • Step 6: Return to a normal game
