Male Athlete of the Year: Jesse Andrews, Football and Mike Dube, Lacrosse
Andrews and Dube were named co-winners of the Male Athlete of the Year award, the first time the award has been shared since 1998. Andrews was a five-year starter at quarterback for the Gaiters, and this year became the first Bishop's passer to hit the 6,000-yard mark. The Sociology major finished his career as the Gaiters' career leader in passing yards (6,560), attempts (874), completions (490) and touchdowns (30). This year, he threw for a career-high 1,626 yards and six touchdowns, along with rushing for three more majors.
Dube, a fourth-year Sports Studies major, led the Gaiters lacrosse team to an 8-2 record and a first-place finish. Dube tied for the league lead in goals (29) and points (39), as the Gaiters advanced to their first league semifinal in three years. Dube was named the CUFLA Most Valuable Player, Most Valuable Attackman, as well as an East Division All-Star. Dube becomes only the second lacrosse player to win Athlete of the Year honours, following Chris Lesanko in 2005.
Female Athlete of the Year: Jessy Roy, Basketball
Roy, a fourth-year point guard, picks up her second career Athlete of the Year title. This year, she returned from an injury to lead the Gaiters in scoring (12.1 points per game) and rebounding (4.2 per game). She finished sixth in the province in scoring, and was also among the league leaders in assists, steals and assist-to-turnover ratio. Roy was named a Second Team All-Star this year, her third career all-star nod, and was the league's nominee for the Tracy McLeod Award.
Female Freshman of the Year: Taylor Wade, Soccer / Hockey
Wade, 18, is the second soccer player to be named Female Freshman of the Year in three years, following fellow Nova Scotian Becky Yates in 2008. Wade, who participated in the 2009 Canada Summer Games, immediately stepped into the Gaiters' starting lineup and became a force in the midfield. She picked up a goal and an assist this year, and was named the team MVP twice during the winter indoor season. In between the outdoor and indoor soccer seasons, Wade also played for the Polar Bears hockey team.
Male Freshman of the Year: Andrew Jamieson, Rugby
Jamieson, 20, started all six games at full back for the Gaiters. A graduate of the powerful John Abbott College program, the Business major immediately became a force in the Gaiters' backfield and was named a Quebec University Rugby Union All-Star. In addition to playing at Bishop's, Jamieson is a member of the Quebec Under-20 Provincial Team, where he scored a pair of tries in two games last summer.
Male Academic Student-Athlete Award: Zak Buis, Football
Buis, a fourth-year linebacker, closed out his career at Bishop's with strong performances on the field and in the classroom. Buis posted an 85% average over the past two years, while completing his B.A. in English with a concentration in Film, Culture and Media Studies. He was named an Academic All-Canadian in 2009-10. On the field, Buis made 16 tackles, one interception and a sack in nine games. After completing his career at Bishop's in December, he joined the Saint-Etienne Giants of the French second division.
Female Academic Student-Athlete Award: Katie Allen, Rugby
Allen has been a pillar of the Gaiter Women's Rugby team, on and off the field, throughout her five-year career. She completed her Bachelor of Arts in Education last year, and is currently completing her Bachelor of Education degree. She posted an 86% average this year, is a three-time member of the Academic Honour Roll, and won the Charles A. Shearson Memorial Prize in 2009. Allen is three-time winner of the Women's Rugby Team Award for dedication and is also a three-time Academic All-Canadian This year, Allen was a finalist for the Quebec Foundation for Athletic Excellence student prize in leadership.
Ray Almond Award (Contribution to Bishop's Athletics) : Karl Hunting
The Ray Almond Award is given annually to a dedicated member of the Bishop's Athletic Community who rises above the expected to deliver an invaluable service for Gaiter Athletics. Karl Hunting served as the Head Coach of the Bishop's Polar Bears women's hockey team for 15 years before retiring after the 2009-10 season. He spent countless hours on the ice, on the phone, and behind the wheel to ensure the club team continued to flourish on campus. Hunting also served as the Gaiters' golf coach through the 2007 season.
