Box Score 3 SHERBROOKE, Que. – There was plenty of action for Bishop's University Athletics this weekend (Oct. 18-20). The men's lacrosse squad hosted a pair of games, the women's soccer team played one on the road and one in Lennoxville and the men's basketball team travelled to Ottawa to play in the House Laughton Tournament.
The men's lacrosse squad secured a home playoff game this weekend with a pair of victories over Concordia and Trent. On Saturday night they scored early and often en route to a 25-4 win over an under-manned Concordia squad. Sunday they played Trent controlling their own playoff destiny. Already assured of hosting a playoff game, they rolled to a 14-6 win that clinched them second place in the CUFLA East and a first round match-up with the Carleton Ravens, a team they have beaten twice this year. That game will take place on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 7:30 p.m. on Coulter Field.
The Bishop's Gaiters women's soccer team played two games on the weekend travelling across town to face the Sherbrooke Vert et Or on Friday, Oct. 18 before hosting the No. 6 Montreal Carabins on Sunday, Oct. 20 in RSEQ University action. They lost the first game 6-0 and the second 5-0.
On Friday the Sherbrooke-Bishop's rivalry was celebrated as Bishop's University's Principal Michael Goldbloom and the Universite of Sherbrooke's Rectrice Luce Samoisette were on hand to present each coach with a recruitment bursary. The two schools also announced that they will work towards having a yearly match-up similar to the Mayor's Cup for the women's soccer programs. On the pitch the Vert et Or controlled the play and came away with the 6-0 win.
The Gaiters hosted the Montreal Carabins on Sunday afternoon in their last home game of the year. The Carabins scored in the fifth minute before doubling their lead right before the half. After the break the visitors continued to pressure the Bishop's goal and scored again in the 57
th minute. The Gaiters began to attack after conceding, but were unable to put the ball past the Montreal keeper.
Molly Bucholtz (Peterborough, On.) stood out again for Bishop's making several saves in the half, but near the end of the game the Carabins scored twice more, making the score 5-0 at the final whistle.
The Gaiters play two away games next week as they travel to Montreal to face the McGill Martlets on Friday, Oct. 25 at 6:30 p.m. and to Trois-Rivieres to take on the UQTR Patriotes on Sunday, Oct. 27, kick off is slated for 1 p.m.
The men's basketball squad was in Ottawa for their second pre-season tournament of the year. It was by far the toughest competition they will face and they dropped all three games. On Friday night they lost to the University of Victoria 80-58. The host Carleton Ravens, the defending CIS Champions were their competition on Saturday. Carleton came out on top 87-55. Their third game in as many days was against the 2013 CIS-finalist Lakehead Thunderwolves. Bishop's again was on the wrong end of a 78-70 score.
The Bishop's men will have a short turnaround as they head to Saskatchewan for the Graham Shootout. They will face the University of Calgary Dinos on Thursday, Oct. 24, the host Saskatchewan Huskies on Friday, Oct. 25 and the University of Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday, Oct. 26.
