SHERBROOKE, Que. – The No. 8 ranked Bishop's Gaiters travel to Montreal on Friday to face the McGill Redmen in RSEQ University Football. The two high-powered offenses will battle for the first time this season as they put their identical 3-2 records on the line at Percival Molson Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
The Gaiters are coming off an offensive performance for the ages. They put up 38 points and 630 total yards of offense against the nation's top ranked defense and team at the time, the Laval Rouge et Or (5-0). Unfortunately for Bishop's Laval scored 46 and won the game. The Gaiters performance was enough for the Football Reporters of Canada to vote Laval out of top spot in the country; they currently are ranked second behind the Western Mustangs.
Bishop's quarterback
Jordan Heather (Oromocto, N.B.) became the school's most prolific passer with his 538 yards through the air. He teamed up 11 times on the day with receiver
Alexander Fox (Montreal) who also set the bar for most receiving yards in purple and silver. Fox finished the day with 12 receptions for 170 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
McGill is coming off a shootout of their own as they topped the winless Concordia Stingers 53-52 in overtime. The Redmen's Pierre-Luc Dussault (Quebec City) was 29-46 for 538 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. That performance earned him RSEQ and CIS Offensive Player of the Week honours.
The Gaiters and Redmen will face each other twice in the last three games of the year. They play on Friday in Montreal and again on Oct. 26 in Lennoxville to close out the season.
"Every game in this league is tough," said Bishop's head coach
Kevin Mackey at the Gaiters weekly Touchdown Club, held Thursday's at noon at the Old Lennoxville Golf Club. "We have to continue to be discipline and play as a team. Dussault was the Cegep double-A MVP last season; he is a player and a threat to run the ball as well."
