GAITERS BASKETBALL SPLIT SEASON OPENING DOUBLE HEADER

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SHERBROOKE, Que. – The Bishop's University men and women's basketball teams opened their regular seasons at home Saturday against the UQAM Citadins.  The women's team fell 69-56 and the men's team won 81-55.

In the opening game of the double-header the Citadins women's squad jumped out to an early lead before a pair of quick scores by the Gaiters made it 20-11 for the visitors after the first frame.  The Citadins extended their advantage to 45-17 at halftime.  The Gaiters dominated the third quarter outscoring UQAM 20-10.  Jenae Grayer (Windsor, Ont.) scored back-to-back-to-back baskets for the Gaiters during their third quarter run.  Bishop's outscored UQAM again, 19-14, in the fourth frame but it was not enough to put them ahead.  The Citadins held on for a 69-56 victory.

The top scorer for the Gaiters was Grayer with 19 points and seven rebounds.  Edith Noblecilla (Quito, Ecuador) had 10 points and eight boards.  Camille Michaud (Amqui, Que.) led UQAM with 18 points and three rebounds while Aleksandra Kancheva (Sofia, Bulgaria) chipped in with thirteen points for the visitors.

The Bishop's men opened the game with a dunk from Matt McLean (Ottawa).  They controlled the first frame scoring 25 points while holding UQAM to only eight.  Majid Naji (Lunel, France) made two three pointers in the last two minutes of the quarter, part of a four-for-four performance from beyond the arc.  UQAM kept the second and third quarter scores close, however a three by Naji and a jumper by Scott Ring (Ottawa) at end the third quarter gave the momentum back to Bishop's.  The Gaiters extended their lead in the fourth frame and went onto an 81-55 victory.

The top scorer for the Gaiters was Naji with 18 points and three rebounds.  Onnex Blackwood (Toronto) had 12 points and four boards.  Philippe Tamba (Quebec) was the leading scorer for UQAM with 19 points and eight rebounds.  Alexandre Bernard (Gatineau, QC.) had nine points and 10 rebounds for the visitors in the loss.

The Gaiters next games are at Concordia on Saturday Nov.16. The women tip-off at 2 p.m. and the men at 4 p.m.
