STRONG SECOND HALF LIFTS BISHOP’S OVER CONCORDIA

Box Score MONTREAL – The Bishop's University Gaiters men's basketball team travelled to Montreal to face the Concordia Stingers on Saturday, a team they eliminated from the 2012-13 playoffs.  A back and forth affair for most of three quarters of play saw Bishop's pull away to a 70-55 victory down the stretch.

A late third quarter run that carried into the fourth frame led the Gaiters. Bishop's outscored the Stingers 18-8 in the final 10 minutes and 32-19 in the second half en route to their convincing 15-point victory.

The Gaiters (2-0) got off to a torrent start when Onnex Blackwood (Scarborough, Ont.) scored a breakaway lay-up off the opening tip. A pair of Mike Andrews (Oakville, Ont.) and Matt McLean (Ottawa) blocks also seemed to set the tone on the defensive end.  Concordia (0-2) was able to weather the storm and trim the visitor's advantage to 18-17 after the first frame.

The tempo was picked up in the second quarter as both the Gaiters and Stingers looked to push the ball and capitalized with multiple fast-break points.  Once the pace calmed down, both teams' half court defenses seemed to cause problems. A buzzer-beater three-pointer at the end of the half gave the hosts a 38-36 lead heading into the break.

A slower pace led to less scoring in the third quarter.  Again the half court defenses dictated tougher shots and fewer points. Both McLean and 6-foot-11 forward Majid Naji (Lunel, France) picked up their fourth fouls in the frame, forcing the Gaiters to rotate different players on the floor. Concordia also got into foul trouble and Bishop's was able to capitalize on a bonus situation down the stretch to grab a 52-47 lead entering the final 10 minutes.

Bishop's carried their third quarter momentum into the fourth frame. They were able to extend their advantage to 10 points with 5:05 remaining and forced Concordia to call timeout. The Gaiters remained unfazed and slowly pulled away.  They went onto win their second game of the season by a final of 70-55.

Bishop's is next in action on Friday, Nov. 22 when the Laval Rouge et Or (0-1) visit Mitchell Gym.
