GAITERS LOOK TO STUFF MARTLETS AND REDMEN BEFORE HOLIDAY BREAK

SHERBROOKE, Que. – The Bishop's University basketball teams will travel to Montreal on Thursday to face the McGill Martlets and Redmen.  The Lady Gaiters will start at 6 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 8 p.m. in Love Competition Hall.

The Lady Gaiters (0-3) will take on the No. 7 McGill Martlets (3-0).  Bishop's has had a rough start to the season losing to UQAM, Concordia and Laval.  The Gaiters have had strong bursts of brilliance but have not been able to keep it going for the full 40 minutes.  The first year contingent on the squad has played very well to date.  Rookies Mara Lis Marchizotti (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and Edith Noblecilla Varela (Quito, Ecuador) put up solid numbers in their latest contest against Laval, 11 and eight points respectively.  McGill is coming off wins over Laval, UQAM and Concordia.  Reigning CIS Rookie of the Year Miriam Sylla (Conakry, Guinea) had seven points against Laval, 14 against UQAM and 11 against Concordia for the Martlets.

The men's basketball team (3-0) will battle for first place against the No. 6 McGill Redmen (3-0).  The Gaiters fell to McGill in the RSEQ final last season. McGill has beaten Laval 62-59, UQAM 87-52 and Concordia 80-62 in their three contests this year.  Rookie guard, Dale Ogundokun (Hamilton, Ont.) has put of strong numbers for the Redmen with 15 points against Laval and 16 points against Concordia.  To date Bishop's has won 81-55 over UQAM, 70-55 over Concordia and 80-69 over Laval.  The Gaiters numbers have been spread across both veterans and newcomers.  Majid Naji (Lunel, France) had 18 points against UQAM while Mike Andrews (Oakville, Ont.) and Onnex Blackwood (Scarborough, Ont.) had 16 and 14 points respectively in the win over Concordia. Sophomore Jona Bermillo (Montreal) chipped in and scored 21 points against Laval.  The winner of this game will take sole possession of first in the RSEQ going into the holiday break.
