Box Score 2 MONTREAL – The Bishop's University basketball teams both lost their final regular season games of 2013 at McGill on Thursday night. The Lady Gaiters fell 70-39 to the Martlets and the men fell 81-63 to the Redmen.
The Lady Gaiters (0-4) lost 70-39 to the No.7 McGill Martlets. Bishop's was outscored from the start of the game, ending the first stanza down 16-9. The Gaiters struggled to get shots to drop and McGill took advantage scoring 27 points in the second quarter. The Lady Gaiters were able to outscore McGill 10-9 in the fourth frame but it was not enough as the hosts cruised to a 70-39 victory.
The top scorer for the Lady's Gaiters was
Edith Noblecilla Varela (Quito, Ecuador) with seven points. She also grabbed 10 rebounds.
Danielle Lumley (Sherbrooke, Que.) chipped in with five points and eight boards. Top scorer for McGill was Mariam Sylla (Conakry, Guinea). She netted 10 points and pulled down six boards. Helene Bibeau (St. Bruno, Que.) and Jenifer Silver (Montreal) both had eight points and seven rebounds for the undefeated Martlets.
The Lady Gaiters are next in action on Dec. 28-30 when they are back in Montreal to compete in the Concordia Invitational Tournament.
The Gaiters (3-1) lost 81-63 to the No. 6 Redmen (4-0). Bishop's broke out to a 5-0 lead thanks to a jumper off the opening tip by
Mike Andrews (Oakville, Ont.) and a three by
Jona Bermillo (Montreal). The quick start had the Gaiters up 23-16 after the first frame. Bishop's was able to increase their advantage to 44-34 at the half thanks in part to solid free throw shooting by Andrews and
Scott Ring (Ottawa). Bishop's had a slow third quarter and was outscored 16-6. Rodrigo Imperador (Bauru, Brazil) drained a jumper to tie the game at 50 at the end of the third frame as the hosts clawed their way back. The Redmen took control of the fourth quarter and never looked back. They scored 31 points to the Gaiters 13. McGill claimed sole possession of first place in the RSEQ going into the holiday break with the 81-63 victory.
Ring led all scorers with 19 points and he added seven rebounds. Andrews contributed 12 points and five rebounds. Top scorer for the Redmen was Nathan Joyal (St. Lazare, Que.) with 17 points and two boards while Vincent Dufort (Smith Falls, Ont.) had 13 points and 10 rebounds.
The Bishop's men are next on the hardwood on Jan. 2-4 when they travel to Halifax to compete in the Rod Shoveller Tournament hosted by Dalhousie.
