BERMILLO BRILLIANT AS BISHOP’S BESTS UQAM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SHERBROOKE, Que. – Super sophomore Jona Bermillo knocked down a three-pointer as time expired on Saturday night to propel the Bishop's University Gaiters men's basketball team to an 83-82 victory over the UQAM Citadins.  The win was the second in as many nights for Bishop's as the squads played a home-and-home series.

Friday night's victory was far less dramatic for the purple and silver.  They cruised to a 71-50 victory in Montreal. Bishop's was led by fifth-year guard Onnex Blackwood (Scarborough, Ont.) who scored 14 points in 30 minutes in that contest.  Rookie forward David Belanger (Sherbrooke, Que.) also scored 14 for the Gaiters. Reigning RSEQ Player of the Year Mike Andrews (Oakville, Ont.) scored 12 and floor general Scott Ring (Ottawa) chipped in with 11.

Saturday was a different story as the Citadins and Gaiters exchanged blows in Mitchell Gymnasium in Lennoxville.  The hosts led 40-35 at the break before UQAM came flying back in the third frame.  Thanks in part to major foul trouble, the visitors were able to grab a lead and extend it to as many as seven points.  UQAM ended the night attempting 35 free throws, including 26 in the second half.  They converted 30 of them.

Bermillo (Montreal) began his heroics at the end of the third quarter as he knocked down a three-pointer go give the Bishop's a one point lead heading into the fourth stanza. A back and fourth quarter appeared to fall the Citadins way when a wild play resulted in a Gaiters foul that sent the Citadins' Richard Addai (Montreal) to the charity stripe with six seconds remaining.  He converted the pair of free throws to give UQAM an 82-80 advantage.  Following a Bishop's timeout, it was 'dejavu all over again' as Bermillo caught the ball at the right angle behind the three-point line and calmly knocked down his biggest shot as a Gaiter to the delight of a boisterous crowd.

"I'm not happy with the way we played tonight but we got the win," said Gaiters head coach Rod Gilpin.  "We committed too many fouls and I'm not sure we deserved to win. I wish I had the answer for why we were such a different team than last night."

The victory allowed the Gaiters (5-1) to keep pace with the McGill Redmen (5-1) who had the weekend off. UQAM falls to 1-7 and is in the basement of the RSEQ standings.

Bishop's will have to prepare for their second straight home-and-home weekend as they entertain the Laval Rouge et Or on Friday night at 8 p.m. in Mitchell Gym then travel to the provincial capital for the backend of the doubleheader on Saturday at 7 p.m.  The Gaiters beat Laval 80-69 in Lennoxville before the Christmas break.
