SHERBROOKE, Que. – The Bishop's Gaiters will face-off against the Laval Rouge et Or this weekend in RSEQ University men's basketball. They will host Laval on Friday night at 8 p.m. in Mitchell Gymnasium and travel to Quebec City on Saturday for a 7 p.m. tip.
Bishop's (5-1) had a thrilling finish to their weekend home-and-home series with UQAM (1-7) last week.
Jona Bermillo (Montreal) knocked down a buzzer beating three-pointer on Saturday night to give Bishop's an 83-82 win in front of their home crowd. The Gaiters won convincingly 71-50 in Montreal the night before. Laval (2-6) dropped a pair to the Concordia Stingers last weekend in their own home-and-home series.
Bishop's beat the Rouge et Or 80-69 in November. Bermillo led the way with 21 points in 31 minutes. He also had four rebounds, three steals and an assist. Six-foot-11 forward
Majid Naji (Lunel, France) chipped in with 13 points while point guard
Scott Ring (Ottawa) netted 11 to go along with five assists.
Matt McLean (Ottawa) rounded out the Gaiters in double figures; he also scored 11 points.
"Laval is a dangerous team," said
Rod Gilpin, the Gaiters head coach. "They have many offensive weapons and a balanced attack. We are excited to play in their new facility on Saturday night especially since it is the gym that will host our playoffs." (Laval will host the first ever RSEQ Final Four from Feb. 28 – Mar. 2.)
Two weeks ago the dangerous Rouge et Or handed McGill (5-1) their only loss of the season. The Redmen are coming off their bye week and are tied for first in the RSEQ with the Gaiters.
Bishop's will host the Rouge et Or on Friday night at 8 p.m. in Mitchell Gym and travel to Quebec City on Saturday night for a 7 p.m. start. Both games can be viewed live online at the links below.
