Box Score 3 SHERBROOKE, Que. – The Bishop's Gaiters spent a combined 1432 kilometers in buses and vans this weekend to compete in regular season action. The men's rugby, lacrosse, golf and women's rugby teams all competed on the road while the women's soccer team secured their first points of the season in a pair of home contests. Wrapping up the busy purple and silver weekend were the men's and women's basketball teams who each played a trio of preseason games outside of Lennoxville.
The Gaiters women's soccer team (1-8-1) started the hectic first weekend of October on Friday night when they hosted the UQAM Citadins (1-6-3). Bishop's got a pair of goals from
Aquila Henry-Cotnam (Richmond Hill, Ont.) while captain
Molly Bucholtz (Peterborough, Ont.) backstopped the Gaiters to their first win of the year, 2-0 over the Citadins. They backed that up with a 0-0 draw against Concordia (3-3-4) on Sunday also on Coulter Field.
On a rainy Saturday, the Bishop's Gaiters men's rugby team (2-1-1) travelled to McGill for a contest with the Redmen (2-1-1).
Lee Hudson (Sutton, Que.) scored two tries for the Gaiters on their way to a 23-23 tie with McGill. The result is the Gaiters best against the eight-time defending champions since 2003. Bishop's and McGill sit in a second place tie, two points behind first place Concordia (3-1).
The lacrosse team played a pair of division rivals in eastern Ontario over the weekend. Saturday they faced off against Trent in Peterborough and overcame a 5-2 halftime deficit to win 9-7. Queen's hosted the Gaiters in Kingston on Sunday. It was all purple all day. Bishop's rolled to an 11-2 victory. With the wins the Gaiters sit in solo second place in the CUFLA East with a 6-2 record.
The women's rugby team (0-6) was in the nation's capital to face the No. 6 Ottawa Gee-Gees (6-0) on Sunday afternoon. The hosts solidified themselves as one of the nation's top teams with a 90-3 victory over the Gaiters.
The Gaiters golf team completed their first round at the 2014 RSEQ Championship at Laval-Sur-Le-Lac Golf Club. With two rounds remaining the men sit in fifth place (out of 12) and the women are in fourth place (out of 5).
On the hardwood the men's and women's basketball teams both got their pre-season calendar underway. The men's squad was at the Guy Vetrie Tournament in Victoria, B.C. They faced some stiff competition against Carleton (four-time defending national champion), University of Alberta (2014 CIS Bronze Medalist) and the host University of Victoria (2014 CIS semi-finalist). Bishop's competed in each game but left the pacific province with a 0-3 record.
The Lady Gaiters were in western Ontario. On Friday they fell to the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks, Saturday they topped Waterloo and on Sunday the Gaiters lost to McMaster in Hamilton.
After a busy weekend many teams will enjoy a break over Thanksgiving although men's rugby plays at Sherbrooke on Wednesday night, the Gaiters Football squad is back in action on Thursday night at McGill and the women's rugby hosts Concordia. Lacrosse plays at Concordia on Thanksgiving Monday night.
