SHERBROOKE, Que. – For the second consecutive week the Bishop's Gaiters men's and women's basketball teams take on a rested opponent on the road. Both Gaiters teams will also play their fourth straight game away from the friendly confines of Mitchell Gym. The Lennoxville crews are in Montreal to face the UQAM Citadins on Saturday, Nov. 29 at 5 and 7 p.m. respectively.
The Lady Gaiters (0-3) are still in search of their elusive first regular season victory since the 2011-12 campaign. They face a UQAM squad (1-1) that will be looking to get back to the RSEQ Championship for the second year in a row. In March 2014 they fell to the McGill Martlets in the title game. The Citadins last stepped on the court on Thursday, Nov. 13 when they fell to McGill (3-0) 60-48. The Gaiters are enjoying their longest layoff of the year as well having last play Thursday, Nov. 20, an 81-42 loss to the Laval Rouge et Or (2-1) in Quebec City. UQAM topped Laval to open their 2014-15 campaign.
The Gaiters men's squad (3-0) looks to complete the before Christmas part of their regular-season schedule with an unblemished record for the first time since 1997. They currently sit alone atop the RSEQ University Basketball standings having topped McGill, Concordia and Laval to date, all on the road. Saturday they face a UQAM Citadins team (0-2) that missed the playoffs a year ago. At 3-0 Bishop's looks poised to earn a spot in the 2015 RSEQ Final-4, the championship event the Gaiters will host in March with a ticket to the CIS Nationals on the line. A season ago the Gaiters were 3-1 against their Montreal foes, including a split in the big city.
The Gaiters will have to contain UQAM's Alexandre Bernard (Gatineau, Que.). He currently sits in second place in the RSEQ in points (15), rebounds (8.5) and field goal percentage (56%) per game. He's also tied with Gaiters point guard
Kurt Caro for tops in the league in assists (4.0) per game. While Bishop's does not have a clear-cut leader in any statistical category, Kyle Demarais (Montreal) is their leading scorer averaging 12.7 points per game, good for an eighth place tie in the conference; they are the only team with a positive turnover margin at +4.33.
Mike Andrews (Oakville, Ont.) is also controlling the paint with 10 blocks on the year and 23 rebounds.
Bishop's basketball will wind up the 2014 portion of their regular season schedule on Saturday in Montreal. They face the UQAM Citadins. The women will tip-off at 5 p.m. with the men to follow at 7 p.m. Watch the games live at:
