GAITERS LACROSSE OFF TO BAGGATAWAY CUP CHAMPIONSHIP

SHERBROOKE, Que. – The Bishop's Gaiters Lacrosse squad is headed back to the Baggataway Cup Championships.  They topped the Trent Excalibur 12-8 in a CUFLA East Playoff match-up on Saturday night. Also tasting success was the women's hockey club while the men's rugby team fell to the Montreal Carabins on Sunday.

For the fifth year in a row, the Gaiters lacrosse team qualifies for the year-end championship, hosted this season in Oshawa, Ontario.   The Gaiters got there thanks to a feisty 12-8 victory over the Trent Excalibur on Saturday night.  Trent tallied the first two goals of the game and grabbed a 3-2 lead after the first frame.  Bishop's came out roaring back in the second and third quarters as they defended their turf.  In front of a boisterous crowd on Coulter Field the Gaiters out-scored the Excalibur 10-1 in the middle two quarters to all but seal the deal taking a 12-4 lead into the final frame.  Trent tried to put up fight scoring four goals in the quarter but they did not get any closer. The game came to a close with some pushing and shoving, leading to 26.5 penalty minutes being handed out between the two sides in the fourth quarter alone. The Gaiters move onto play for a championship they last won in 2011 and the Trent Excalibur's season comes to a close.

The men's rugby squad was in action on Sunday, Nov. 2 in Montreal.  They faced the fourth place Carabins. Montreal is solidified in the fourth slot in the RSEQ University Men's Rugby standings while the Gaiters are competing for a regular season title.  It was the hosts who sent a message, topping Bishop's 22-12.  For Bishop's they have one game remaining on Friday, Nov. 7 on Coulter Field.  They can finish as high as first place in the league and as low as third.

The Bishop's women's hockey club played an exhibition game against NEA Dynamie Estrie on Sunday evening in W.B. Scott Arena.  Bishop's was led by Jess Kipping (Ottawa) who scored two goals and added an assist as the Polar Bears came back from 2-0 and 3-2 deficits to win 4-3.

The men's lacrosse squad will take on Guelph in the quarterfinal of the 2014 Baggataway Cup Championship in Oshawa on Friday, Nov. 7 at 6 p.m. They will need three wins in as many days to hoist the championship trophy.  Men's rugby wraps up their regular season with a tilt against McGill who currently sits in first place.  That game is set for 7 p.m. on Coulter Field also on Friday.  Women's hockey is back in action on Sunday, Nov. 9.  They play an exhibition contest against the Sherbrooke Chochettes.
