SHERBROOKE, Que. – The Bishop's Gaiters men's basketball team will play Concordia in the first round of the RSEQ University men's basketball playoffs on March 1. They have some unfinished business to attend to in before getting there. The Gaiters play their final two regular season games on Friday, Feb. 21 and Saturday, Feb. 22 against Concordia and Laval respectively.
For the last time in the 2013-14 season the Gaiters (8-6) will step into Mitchell Gymnasium when they host the Concordia Stingers (8-6) on Friday, Feb. 21 at 8p.m. It will be the fourth time the foes meet with their fifth and biggest meeting of the year set for eight days later (Mar. 1) in Quebec City at the inaugural RSEQ Final Four.
Seemingly the game on Friday in Lennoxville is meaningless, however the Gaiters have lost two straight while Concordia has won their last two. Bishop's has had the upper hand this year (they lead the season series 3-0), including a pair of close contests just two weeks ago. Bishop's snuck out a 64-61 victory in Montreal on Saturday, Feb. 8 the last time they met. While Bishop's is coming off a weekend they'd like to forget, dropping a pair to McGill (12-2) and UQAM (3-11), Concordia is gaining momentum. Stingers guard and former Gaiter Mukiya Post (Victoria) scored 33 and 40 points in their two wins over the Citadins and Laval a week ago. His performance earned him CIS Athlete of the Week honours.
Saturday the Gaiters will travel to Quebec City for a 7 p.m. tip with Laval (4-10) in a gym that will determine their playoff fate. Bishop's was undermanned and outmatched 85-74 in the provincial capital the last time these two squads faced off on Jan. 25. They will look to create positive memories and perhaps shake up the RSEQ playoff picture. Laval is fighting for the fourth and final playoff spot with UQAM. The two teams meet on Friday night in Montreal. That result could mean the Gaiters-Rouge et Or match-up on Saturday has heavy playoff implications or mean nothing at all.
"We are looking to build momentum heading into the playoffs, something that we did not do a good job of last week," said Gaiters head coach
Rod Gilpin. "I don't think either team will show their cards on Friday night knowing we will be first-round playoff opponents. We will go into Saturday's game with the same attitude, building momentum, regardless of what it means to Laval."
The Bishop's Gaiters men's basketball squad closes out their up-and-down RESQ regular season this weekend with a pair of games. Friday the Concordia Stingers visit Lennoxville for an 8 p.m. tip and on Saturday the purple and silver is in Quebec City to face the Rouge et Or at 7 p.m. Both games will be available live on the Internet.
