GAITERS SPLIT, CLINCH SECOND IN FINAL RSEQ WEEKEND
February 23, 2014

SHERBROOKE, Que. – Heading into the final weekend of RSEQ University basketball, the Bishop's Gaiters men's squad knew they were going to be taking on the Concordia Stingers in the RSEQ semi-final slated for March 1 in Quebec City.  What was uncertain was exact positioning.  Bishop's completed the regular season sweep over the Stingers with a dramatic 78-76 victory on Friday night in Mitchell Gym.  The victory clinched second place for the purple and silver.  Saturday Bishop's travelled to Quebec City to wrap up the 2013-14 regular season campaign.  Laval came out on top 73-71.

Both games over the weekend had seemingly meaningless playoff implications, however the Gaiters battled in both games.  Friday was 'Senior's Night' as three graduates were honoured before the game in Mitchell Gym.  One of those was fifth-year guard Onnex Blackwood (Scarborough, Ont.) who refused to lose his last game in Lennoxville.  Blackwood led the Gaiters with 19 points on 7-for-11 shooting in 30 minutes. He also had three assists and three steals.  The Gaiters came back from a 61-56 deficit heading into the fourth quarter to grab the two-point victory. Scott Ring (Ottawa) and Matt McLean (Ottawa) were the other two seniors honoured.  They graduate after four years, both as academic all-Canadians.

Saturday was a game where both Laval (6-10) and Bishop's (9-7) looked to the week ahead. The Gaiters rested some banged up players ensuring they will be ready for March 1.  Bishop's was led by Jaleel Webb (Montreal). He scored 16 points while Blackwood chipped in with 15 in the 73-71 loss. Eight Gaiters played at least 10 minutes in the contest.

"I was really happy for Onnex to get a win in his last home game," said Gaiters head coach Rod Gilpin after Friday's game.  "Matt and Scott too, but we are hoping they come back for their fifth year.

"Games that start count in seven days," he added after Saturday's match-up.

The Gaiters regular season comes to an end as they prepare for their first-round RSEQ playoff match-up against the Concordia Stingers. The game will be the first on the men's side in the inaugural RSEQ Final Four. It is set to take place at PEPS gym on the Laval University campus in Quebec City on Saturday, March 1 at 1 p.m.
