SHERBROOKE, Que. – Bishop's University athletics teams will be well traveled this first weekend of regular season action. Women's soccer plays a pair of games while women's rugby, football, men's rugby and lacrosse will all start their respective campaigns with a single contest.
Chris Hornibrook, the newest Gaiters head coach will lead his women's soccer team into action in the CIS regular season for the first time. Bishop's travels to Concordia on Friday night for a tilt with the Stingers at 6:30 p.m. They play their second game in three days on Sunday when they open their home schedule against cross-town rival Sherbrooke. The Gaiters went 1-1-1 on a three game road trip in New Brunswick in the pre-season.
The Gaiters football squad will open their season on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Concordia Stadium. Bishop's will look to build of last year's 6-2 record. The Gaiters played in a controlled scrimmage against Sherbrooke last Saturday to prepare for this week. The game will be live on Radio-Canada television. The women's rugby team under second-year head coach
Adam Spirk kicks their CIS regular season off in Montreal against the Carabins. They play on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Gaiters won the two pre-season games they played, also in New Brunswick.
Sunday will see the first regular season action for any Gaiter squad in Lennoxville. The men's rugby kicks off the Bishop's – Sherbrooke Vert et Or double header at 1 p.m. The women's soccer team follows at 3:15 p.m. The Bishop's men's rugby team looks to bounce back after missing the playoffs a year ago. They showed promise cruising to a 32-0 win over Norwich University in their only pre-season contest.
Finally the weekend concludes with the Lacrosse team travelling to the nation's capital on Sunday for a match with the Ottawa Gee-Gees. The Gee-Gees are an expansion team in the CUFLA; while the Gaiters look to return to the Baggataway Cup Championships for the fifth straight year.
