GAITERS STUMBLE OUT OF THE GATE

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SHERBROOKE, Que. – Veteran Jonathan Bermillo scored 25 points to lead the Bishop's Gaiters in their season opening game at UQAM on Thursday but it wasn't enough as Bishop's comeback came up short and left the Citadins with a 79-75 victory to open the season. The 2015-16 RSEQ University men's basketball season continued on Saturday for the Gaiters as they hosted No. 3 McGill.  The Redmen spoiled the Gaiters home opener by a final of 94-68.

Bermillo (Montreal) is without a doubt a leader on the Gaiters.  He is one of just three returning players from their 2015 RSEQ Championship team.  He and fellow team captain David Belanger (Sherbrooke) tried to take the Bishop's on their back in Thursday's season opener but the Gaiters had dug themselves too big of a hole and their comeback came up short.  Bermillo led all scorers with 25 points on 9-18 shooting in 33 minutes. Belanger chipped in with 18 points of his own and seven rebounds. Rookie Abdul Kamane (Montreal) rounded out purple scorers in double figures; he had 17 points and played a team-high 37 minutes.

Saturday it was third-year transfer Peter Weston (Quebec City) who shone brightly in his first taste of RSEQ basketball in Mitchell Gym.  He took charge with 19 points including an 8-10 performance from the charity stripe.  Bermillo and Kamane each added 12 points and Belanger 10 in the losing cause for the Gaiters who at times went shot for shot with the nation's third-ranked team, the Redmen.  Unfortunately for Bishop's and the 447 faithful who turned up for their home opener they were not able to sustain the pressure for a full 40 minutes and the veteran Redmen pulled away and eventually won 94-68.

Next up for the Gaiters is a tilt with the Laval Rouge et Or on Saturday, Nov. 21 at 8 p.m.  The contest is the last in Mitchell Gym for the 2015 calendar year.  Tickets are available at www.gaiters.ca/tickets or gameday at the door.

QUICK STATS: Bishop's was out-rebounded in both contests, 42-38 against UQAM while McGill held a 44-29 edge. The Gaiters were 27-65 from the floor in Montreal and shot 21-47 in the friendly confines of Mitchell Gym.  Saturday the Redmen attempted 31 more shots than the Gaiters while shooting 10-26 from long range. The famous Gaiters crowd was able to get under the visitors' skin on Saturday night as McGill was just 14-24 from the free throw line.
