HOME COURTS PREVAIL AS GAITERS SPLIT WITH CITADINS

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SHERBROOKE, Que. – A ruckus Mitchell Gym on Friday night was the setting for one of the most dominating performances of the year for the Bishop's University men's basketball team.  The team played their first game of the 2014-15 campaign back in the historic gymnasium. The result with the support of a boisterous crowd was an 81-57 victory over the UQAM Citadins.

UQAM returned the favour on Saturday night as the Citadins defended their home turf with a 71-64 win.

Mike Andrews (Oakville, Ont.) showed his 2012-13 RSEQ MVP form.  He scored 23 points and pulled down 12 rebounds in just 23 minutes of court time. He was 10-for-15 from the floor.  Fifth-year forward Majid Naji (Lunel, France) added a "double-double" of his own with 15 points and 12 boards. Kyle Desmarais (Montreal) scored 11 points on 4-for-8 shooting, grabbed seven rebounds, added two assists a steal and a block in 30 minutes of playing time to fill out his dynamic stat line.

Bishop's controlled the game from the get go.  The hosts led 24-18 after the first frame, 43-25 at halftime and 61-39 heading into the last stanza before winning 81-57.

Unfortunately for the Gaiters they could not back up that performance on Saturday.  They returned to the site of their first defeat of the year in November and once again struggled with the feisty Citadins. Despite Desmarais' 22 points and nine rebounds and third-year guard Jona Bermillo's (Montreal) 10 points off the bench the Gaiters could not find their legs.  UQAM upset Bishop's 71-64 to remain in the playoff hunt. The squads were tied after the first quarter, UQAM led by a pair at halftime, extended their advantage to 54-47 and went onto the 71-64 victory.

The split makes the RSEQ University Basketball standings very close as the teams look to qualify for the RSEQ Final-4 that is set to take place at Bishop's University from March 5-7, 2015.  McGill leads the way at 8-4, Bishop's, Concordia and Laval all have identical 6-6 records and the Citadins are in fifth place at 4-8.  The Gaiters have one contest left with each of their foes all in Mitchell Gym in the next three weeks.  Their next game is Friday, February 13 against the Concordia Stingers at 8 p.m.
