SHERBROOKE, Que. - The Bishop's Gaiters women's basketball team continues their non-conference play as they head to St. John's, N.L. for the Marie's Mini Mart Fall Classic, hosted by Memorial University of Newfoundland.
The Gaiters will play three games, taking on the Nipissing Lakers on Friday at 4:30 p.m. (all times Eastern), the Brandon Bobcats on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. and the host MUN Sea-Hawks on Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m.
The Gaiters come into the tournament on the heels of a perfect 3-0 record at the Helen Campbell Invitational in Fredericton, N.B., the Gaiters' first tournament win since taking the 2008 Loeb Glebe tournament in Ottawa.
Edith Noblecilla (Guayaquil, Ecuador) was named Tournament MVP last week, after averaging 15.7 points and 4.7 rebounds over the three games.
Ashley Milhomme (Repentigny, Que.) was named to the tournament all-star team, after she averaged 13.3 points and 3.0 boards. Veteran centre
Mara Marchizotti (Buenos Aires, Argentina) led the Gaiters on the boards, with 27 over the three games.
The Gaiters are familiar with their Friday opponent, as they played the Nipissing Lakers in non-conference play last season. The Gaiters picked up a 63-48 win in that game, played in North Bay last October. The Lakers, who are in their third year of CIS play, are 1-4 against CIS opponents so far this fall, with their only win coming against StFX last week.
On Saturday, "BU" bragging rights are on the line, as the Gaiters take on the Brandon University Bobcats, from Canada West. The Bobcats are 0-2 in non-conference play so far this year, having lost to Regina and Manitoba so far. Last year, the Bobcats went 8-14 in league play and missed the playoffs.
On Sunday, the Gaiters will take on the host Memorial Sea-Hawks. This will be the first meeting between the teams since a 2013 matchup in Montreal, won by Memorial 69-47. The Sea-Hawks are 0-2 so far this year, having been swept by Acadia in a non-conference series earlier this month. Last year, they went 4-16 and missed the AUS playoffs for the first time in more than 20 years.
